Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient natural healing energy technique believed to have originated in Tibet, but rediscovered in Japan during the late 1800’s by the scholar Dr. Mikao Usui (see picture). He believed that we all possess the capacity and ability to heal ourselves and others using healing energy, but found it very difficult to scientifically prove this. Thus began his quest for knowledge and study of this ancient ability and his determination to seek out and represent adequate proof for his theory.
After many years of studying ancient texts and holy books and speaking to many learned wise men and scholars, he still hadn’t uncovered this ancient technique.
However, his belief was resolute and so he asked for enlightenment by God during meditations. One particular day, his wish was granted to him on a Holy mountain and he was granted many sacred symbols and the ability to ‘tap into’ a long- forgotten healing source.
He taught many students whilst healing, and Dr. Chijuro Hayashi seemed to be the most promising to continue the Reiki lineage as a Grandmaster. Due to his powerful psychic abilities, much is owed to Dr. Hayashi who ensured the survival of the teachings of Reiki after Dr. Usui’s ascension.
Dr. Hayashi then initiated another Grandmaster, Hawayo Takata, who was a dedicated student to Reiki knowledge and teachings, who in turn, introduced Reiki healing to the Western culture, bringing it to the fore in the 1970’s. Since then Reiki has continued to grow and evolve and be of interest to those who are looking for alternative ways of understanding and healing the body aside from traditional Western medicine practices.
Reiki is Universal Life Energy, and it is represented by two Kanji, ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki’. Rei translates as ‘universal, transcendental spirit -a boundless essence’ while Ki translates as ‘life-force energy’, hence everything that is alive contains and radiates Ki.
Reiki energy is a beautiful natural Universal energy that works by being channelled down through a practitioners’ head, out through their hands and into the receiver - which can be any living thing. Unlike most laying on of hands or touch healing, Reiki differs as the energy channels within a person are opened up via attunements by a Reiki Master, allowing this natural energy to flow through them. It is wonderfully simplistic in how it works - the energy itself seems to possess its own consciousness and the receiver ‘draws’ it to them from the universe as opposed to the healer actually directing it to the recipient. The healer doesn’t necessarily heal the recipient, but actively encourages the body’s own internal healing process. -Remember, your body is a powerful healing being that possesses a true desire to fulfil its’ utmost potential. Reiki is amazing in its lack of complexity and anyone of any age can give and receive Reiki. The effects of Reiki vary greatly within each person and it’s benefits are far reaching, if not initially obvious at the time of treatment.
The benefits of Reiki cover the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual aspects of ourselves, encouraging rebalance and stability within all these expressions of our being. These include helping to:
Induce a state of deep relaxation
Relieve pain - physical and emotional
Accelerate natural healing
Aid in the detoxification process within the body
Calm the mind and body, restoring a feeling of peace
Dissolve energy blockages within the body
Focus the mind - negating confusion and helping to induce problem solving
Release tension and negative stress
Rebalance the body’s energy systems
Release unneeded emotions
Improve health and well-being
Amplify energy levels
Assist in increasing motivation
Understand better the world and what part we play within it
Make us aware of particular life patterns we form
Enable necessary positive changes to be made in life
Many people working in a ‘hands on’ profession for example, massage, reflexology, chiropractics or care workers, to name but a few, find learning about Reiki and having attunements beneficial to their clients as the Reiki energy comes through when working, adding potential to the healing rate.
From a solely personal point of view, having practised Reiki for a few years now, I truly believe that everything begins and ends with healing. Whilst healing can perform wonderful instant results, it sets in place internal processes that may be slow to externalise, but are nonetheless very powerful and entirely individual. One persons’ experience of healing benefits are completely different to another, with this simply reflecting our own uniqueness and personal knowledge. Reiki healing can be used to speed up any healing process resulting from an operation or injury, and assist in easing any emotional or mental shocks or traumas. - There really are no limits!
I would also like to mention that Reiki is not meant as a substitute for medical, or psychological diagnosis and treatment. I do not diagnose conditions or interfere with the treatment of a licensed medical professional. It is recommended you see your GP or health care professional for any physical or psychological ailment you may have.
